Can you travel with a recovery driver? Passenger arrangements explained
Understand passenger requests, driver quote allowances and why a vehicle recovery booking does not automatically include a lift.

Recovery of the car is not automatically transport for people
A vehicle recovery booking concerns the agreed recovery service. Passenger travel depends on a separate agreement and lawful seating, capacity, insurance and safety arrangements. Do not assume a truck has space for everyone travelling in the car.
Make passenger needs clear before choosing a quote. If a driver cannot take passengers, the recovery quote can still be offered and accepted; you will need suitable separate travel arrangements.
State the total number who need to travel
The Quartz booking question asks whether anyone needs to travel with the driver. If Yes, choose one or two passengers, counting the customer in that total. If No, there is no requested passenger count. New requests are limited to two, not two plus the customer.
Mention access or mobility-equipment requirements early. Selecting a number is a request, not confirmation that a particular truck or driver can meet every requirement. Discuss the practical arrangements before relying on a lift.
- Count everyone, including the customer
- Choose one or two only if travel is needed
- Mention mobility equipment or other access needs
- Have an alternative if suitable travel cannot be agreed
Read the allowance on the individual quote
An updated driver quote can state no passengers, one passenger or two passengers. Compare that allowance with your requested total. A lower allowance is a reason to clarify arrangements, not evidence that the driver is unsuitable to recover the vehicle.
Some older quotes may say ‘Passenger allowance not specified’. That is not permission to travel. Ask for clarification rather than treating a missing answer as consent.
Agree safe arrangements before setting off
Passenger travel must use suitable lawful seating and restraints. If children need to travel, raise their requirements in advance and check the current official guidance; do not assume a recovery truck has the required child seat or that an exception applies.
Never plan to remain inside a vehicle while it is being transported. If safe arrangements cannot be agreed, arrange separate transport and tell the driver how collection and destination handover will work. Contact Quartz support for booking questions, or emergency services for an immediate threat to safety.
